HOW TO COMPARE
MANUFACTURING QUOTES

Make sure every quote is pricing the same job.

The lowest number on the page is not always the cheapest way to get your part. Before you compare prices, check that every supplier quoted the same part, the same quantity and the same extras.

FIRST
Same scope on every quote.
THEN
Read what is left out.
LAST
Compare price and fit.

Line up the scope first

Check that each quote covers the same revision, quantity, material, finish, extra operations, inspection, packaging and delivery point.

A quote that leaves out finishing or inspection can look cheaper while the cost just shows up later.

Read the assumptions and what is excluded

Suppliers often assume different things. Look for differences like these:

  • Tolerances applied where the drawing is silent
  • Who pays for tooling or fixtures
  • Material substitutions
  • Freight and packaging
  • Material certificates and first-article inspection

Check when the lead time starts

Lead time can start at the purchase order, at drawing approval, when material arrives, or at some other point. Ask what starts the clock and whether finishing is included.

On a tight schedule, a supplier you trust to hit the date and keep you posted can be worth more than a small price difference.

Look past the piece price

A good fit also means the right capability, a solid quality process, quick answers, reasonable shipping, consistent repeat orders, clean paperwork and room to grow with you.

The best quote is the one that fits the whole job and the risk you can live with, not just the smallest number.
